Rene Gonzalez

EA, CPA, MST

Nonprofit Tax Manager | Compliance & Strategy

I specialize in exempt organizations, a field I have been passionate about for over nine years. I’ve worked in small, mid-sized, and large public accounting firms, supporting both local nonprofits and large national organizations. I hold a Master of Science in Taxation (MST) from Golden Gate University and possess CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and EA (Enrolled Agent) credentials, as well as Not-for-Profit Certificates I & II from the AICPA, underscoring my expertise and dedication to the nonprofit sector.

As an introvert, I excel in focused, purpose-driven environments. My strength lies in working independently to bring clarity to complex projects, ensuring that processes run smoothly and the team’s work is effective.

Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel, I use it to enhance efficiency and accuracy across various tax services and financial analysis tasks. I also have a strong interest in Generative AI and frequently incorporate it into my work to streamline tasks and improve data analysis. I am continually learning how AI can help me work smarter.

In my most recent role as a Tax Manager, my key responsibilities included:

  • Reviewing Forms 990, 990-T, and related state returns for nonprofit organizations, including foundations, educational institutions, and healthcare entities.
  • Ensuring filings were accurate and compliant, assisting with tax research and planning, and providing creative solutions tailored to client goals.
  • Supervising and coaching staff, promoting team collaboration, and managing projects from start to finish to ensure our team consistently delivered high-quality results.

When I’m not working, I enjoy reading fiction, especially Magical Realism, and nonfiction, preferably true stories involving financial crimes, usually with a good coffee in hand. I also like writing research-based posts for LinkedIn, a hobby that allows me to share interesting findings about tax, nonprofits, and technology.
